John James Audubon in the early 1800s. He painted the birds in their
natural habitats, often with flowers, leaves, branches, or berries, and excelled at
showing the animals in motion (in contrast to the stiff poses depicted in other
ornithology illustrations of the time).
These images are valued as much
for their beauty and artistic achievement as for their scientific merit.
They were quite popular in Audubon's lifetime and continue to be favorites
today.
