Newbery came up with the idea of books published specifically for
children, there has been an avalanche of books created for young readers.
The Newbery Award in the United States, named after John Newbery, is given
every year for the best book published specifically for kids.
One of the most enduring traditions
of books for children is the ABC book. Aside from the nursery rhyme, no
other genre has been so extensively produced. The late 1800s produced
scores of these books in English, and some of the best are presented in this collection of alphabet books. Most of this
collection was first published in England, where these books were enjoyed
by children and adults alike. Some include "early reader" lessons in
